Canada Expands Urgent Pistachio Recall Amid Salmonella Outbreak
URGENT UPDATE: Canada is expanding its recall of pistachio products due to a potential salmonella contamination that has already sickened nearly 60 people and resulted in nine hospitalizations. This latest recall affects multiple products, including the Andalos brand of baklava, with concerns stemming from an ongoing foodborne illness outbreak.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced today, October 26, 2023, that seven Andalos products—including various baklava varieties—are now included in this recall. The affected products are distributed across Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, as well as online. This follows earlier recalls linked to certain brands of pistachios and related products, notably a viral chocolate bar from Dubai.
As salmonella infections have been traced back to these pistachio products, the CFIA’s investigation reveals alarming trends: approximately 75% of those affected are women, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The agency warns that individuals may become ill after consuming not only raw pistachios but also baked goods containing them.
The CFIA emphasizes the seriousness of this recall, advising Canadians to check their homes for any recalled products. If you suspect you have consumed a contaminated item, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately. Symptoms of salmonella infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, and nausea. Vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk for severe illness.
Authorities are urging consumers to dispose of or return any recalled products to the point of purchase. The CFIA is actively verifying that the industry is removing these dangerous items from store shelves and the marketplace.
This developing situation highlights the importance of food safety and consumer vigilance in the face of potential health risks. Canadians are encouraged to stay informed as more details emerge. Follow up with local health authorities and stay tuned for updates on this urgent matter.
