UPDATE: The HMCS Regina has officially set sail from CFB Esquimalt for a critical Arctic mission as part of Operation Latitude. Family members gathered to bid farewell during a heartfelt ceremony on Monday, August 28, 2025, as the ship embarks on a deployment expected to last at least six weeks.

This mission focuses on enhancing Canada’s national security by “detecting, deterring, and defending” against potential threats while reinforcing Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic region. The urgency of this operation underscores the growing geopolitical tensions in the area.

For many families, this deployment marks an emotional milestone. “It’s not something I’ve experienced before,” shared Jenni Bateman, spouse of a crew member on HMCS Regina. “Knowing that somebody who you’re so accustomed to having in your day-to-day life isn’t going to be there… it is a bit to wrap your head around.”

Officials from the National Defence have confirmed that these operations are vital for maintaining stability and security in the Arctic, an area of increased interest for military operations due to its strategic importance.

Present at the send-off was the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC), which provides essential support to families during deployments. Executive Director Jackie Carlé emphasized the importance of establishing support networks. “It’s so important to be able to have someone you can reach out to,” she said, highlighting the emotional toll of separation.

As HMCS Regina and its sister ship, HMCS Max Bernays, head towards the Western Arctic, they will engage in joint operations with the U.S. military. This collaboration aims to enhance domain awareness and military interoperability, crucial elements in today’s defense strategy.

The departure from CFB Esquimalt highlights the ongoing commitment of the Canadian Armed Forces to safeguard national interests. As family members adjust to this new reality, the support systems in place are more vital than ever.

Stay tuned for further updates as these ships commence their vital operations in the Arctic, an area that continues to draw international focus due to its strategic significance.
