Canadian Hockey Legends Reunite for Serge Savard Invitational
Legends from the iconic 1976 Canadian men’s hockey team are reuniting nearly five decades after their historic victory in the inaugural Canada Cup. This gathering includes prominent figures such as Bobby Orr, Darryl Sittler, Bobby Clarke, and head coach Scotty Bowman, who are expected to convene today at Le Mirage Golf Club for the Invitation Serge Savard.
The reunion celebrates the team’s remarkable achievement on September 15, 1976, when Sittler scored the overtime winner, securing a thrilling 5-4 victory over Czechoslovakia in the second game of the best-of-three final at the Montreal Forum. Orr, who was named the tournament’s MVP, contributed significantly with two goals and seven assists throughout the seven-game series.
Reflecting on the victory, Orr described the Canada Cup title as the highlight of his career, noting that it was the only occasion he represented Canada in an international tournament while wearing the red and white Maple Leaf. The 1976 Canada Cup marked the first of five such events and laid the groundwork for future best-on-best competitions at world championships and the Olympics.
Significance of the Event
The inaugural tournament also featured teams from the Soviet Union, Sweden, the United States, and Finland, with matches hosted across several cities, including Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Quebec City, and Philadelphia. The event not only highlighted Canada’s prowess in hockey but also solidified the format for international play that would follow.
In addition to the 1976 team members, several former players from the Montreal Canadiens are set to participate in today’s invitational. The event is organized to raise funds for student-athletes at the University of Sherbrooke, emphasizing the ongoing commitment of these hockey legends to support the next generation of athletes.
