UPDATE: Dozens of children are competing RIGHT NOW in a thrilling hand game tournament at the Alberta Indigenous Games (AIG), which began on July 25, 2023. This unique event showcases a traditional Dene game that is capturing the attention of participants and spectators alike.

The hand game, a strategic guessing game where players hide objects in their hands, features 12 teams, each consisting of 6 to 7 players. This year marks a significant increase in participation compared to just a few teams competing six years ago when Caroline Isadore, a councillor from the Driftpile Cree Nation, first introduced the game to the tournament.

Isadore emphasized the cultural importance of the hand game: “Hand game is something our ancestors, first peoples of the land, did. It is a way of bartering… Our livelihood, our sustainability as a first people, we would do a cultural event to be able to gather for sustainability and barter.” This statement highlights the deep-rooted traditions that the game represents.

The tournament is not just a competition; it reflects the spirit of community and cultural exchange. Children from all over Alberta are joining in the festivities, breaking barriers in a game traditionally played only by men in regions like the Whati area in the Northwest Territories. Ten-year-old player Tanya Noskey boldly stated, “Girls are better at hand games than boys,” showcasing the evolving dynamics of the game.

As the AIG wraps up this Saturday, participants will also compete in other sports such as baseball, volleyball, archery, and lacrosse finals. The excitement is palpable, as the tournament serves as a platform for youth to engage with their heritage while fostering competitive spirit.

With the growing interest and participation in traditional games like the hand game, the Alberta Indigenous Games are nurturing a new generation committed to preserving and celebrating Indigenous culture. Stay tuned for updates as these engaging competitions continue to unfold!
