Canada is set to initiate formal trade discussions with the United States starting in January 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this development on December 19, emphasizing the importance of reviewing the existing free trade agreement. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Dominic LeBlanc, the Internal Trade Minister, will meet with his U.S. counterparts to discuss the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade deal. This announcement follows a meeting between Carney and provincial leaders, where he highlighted the potential benefits of cooperative economic efforts between the two nations.

In a separate political context, Don Davies, the interim leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), stressed the need for the party to reconnect with voter priorities as it prepares for leadership elections. Davies remarked that the party’s recent electoral defeat in April was partly due to its detachment from grassroots concerns, particularly regarding pharmacare. He plans to advise his successor to engage with a broader range of perspectives. The NDP will elect a new leader on March 29, 2026, during its annual convention in Winnipeg.

The Alto corporation, responsible for the project, estimates significant improvements in intercity travel if the network comes to fruition. The federal government previously announced that the first segment will connect Montreal and Ottawa, with construction expected to begin in 2029. Trains are projected to reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour on dedicated tracks powered by electricity.

In entertainment news, filmmaker James Cameron has made headlines while promoting his latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, in Toronto. Cameron addressed discussions regarding Canadian sovereignty, firmly stating that Canada will never become the 51st state of the United States. The director emphasized the cultural significance of Canada in influencing his work, particularly the fictional world of Pandora, which he traces back to his childhood experiences in the Ontario village of Chippewa, near Niagara Falls.
