Ford Recalls Nearly 1 Million Vehicles Over Fuel Pump Issues

Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1 million vehicles in Canada and the United States due to concerns regarding the low-pressure fuel pump, which may fail and potentially cause engine stalls while driving. This defect increases the risk of crashes, prompting the manufacturer to take precautionary measures.
The recall affects multiple models, including the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator from the 2021 to 2023 model years. Additionally, the recall encompasses the F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, and F-550 SD trucks, as well as the Lincoln Navigator, Ford Mustang, F-150 from 2021 to 2022, and the 2022 Expedition.
Notifications will be sent to affected vehicle owners starting on Monday, alerting them to the safety risks associated with potential fuel pump failure. While Ford is currently developing a remedy, the specific timeline for when a fix will be available remains unclear. Once a solution is ready, affected owners will receive an additional letter with instructions to visit an authorized dealer for the repair, which will be offered at no charge.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this recall. However, the report emphasizes that owners should remain vigilant for signs of potential fuel pump failure. Customers may notice poor engine performance, which could manifest as a check engine light or a reduction in engine power prior to a complete failure.
The NHTSA’s recall report indicates that fuel pump failure is “more likely to occur” during warm weather or if the fuel tank is low. Factors contributing to the loss of fuel pressure and flow may include internal contamination of the vehicle’s jet pump. Ford’s review of its manufacturing process also highlighted supplier changes that may have contributed to this issue.
In the United States, Ford estimates that approximately 10 percent of the 850,318 vehicles recalled are at risk of fuel pump failure. In Canada, 107,534 vehicles are affected as part of the same recall.
As Ford navigates this significant recall, it remains committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers. Owners of the affected vehicles are encouraged to stay alert for communications from the company and to address any immediate concerns regarding vehicle performance.
