G.S. Dunn Expands Bow Island Mustard Mill with $30M Investment

A significant expansion of the mustard milling operations by G.S. Dunn Limited in Bow Island has been announced, involving a substantial investment of $30 million. This venture is supported by a $3.1 million tax credit from the Alberta government, aimed at enhancing the company’s capacity and market reach.
The expansion is projected to create 34 new jobs and grant access to two new international markets, namely Japan and South Korea. Additionally, it will significantly increase the company’s demand for raw mustard seed, which is expected to rise from $13 million to $44 million annually, with all supplies sourced from western Canada.
Investment Details and Economic Impact
The Alberta government has highlighted this investment as part of the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit (APITC) program. This provincial initiative offers a 12 percent non-refundable tax credit for investments of $10 million or more in value-added agri-processing projects.
RJ Sigurdson, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, emphasized the significance of such investments, stating, “Investors continue to choose Alberta as a place to establish roots, grow and expand because it makes good business sense.” He noted that the APITC is a key element in the government’s strategy to foster favorable conditions for businesses, attract investment, diversify the economy, and generate more jobs for residents.
The expansion in Bow Island represents the second phase of G.S. Dunn’s ongoing value-added mustard milling project in the region. Since entering Alberta, the company has remarkably increased its processing capacity by more than 200 percent. The latest phase alone is expected to enhance output by approximately 70 percent compared to pre-expansion levels.
Company Growth and Future Aspirations
G.S. Dunn’s Chief Financial Officer, Daniel Boullion, expressed pride in the new facility, stating, “We are proud to announce the successful completion of our new mustard mill in Bow Island.” He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the provincial government, the Town of Bow Island, local construction firms, and the dedicated workforce that made the project possible. Boullion further remarked, “We look forward to continuing to strengthen the agri-processing industry in southern Alberta together with our local mustard grower partners.”
Headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, G.S. Dunn is recognized as the world’s largest supplier of value-added milled mustard, offering over 250 products to 130 customers across more than 70 countries. The company acquired the former Spitz sunflower seed plant in Bow Island in 2019, transforming it into a specialized mustard milling facility.
This latest expansion reflects G.S. Dunn’s commitment to innovation and growth in the agri-processing sector, positioning the company for continued success on a global scale.
