Kugaaruk Residents Advised to Boil Water After Do-Not-Consume Order Lifted

Residents of Kugaaruk, a community in Nunavut with approximately 1,200 inhabitants, can now use tap water again, but they must boil it before consumption. The territory’s health department announced on Tuesday that the do-not-consume order for drinking water has been lifted, although a boil water advisory remains in effect due to ongoing safety concerns.

The advisory continues as a precautionary measure following a recent mechanical issue at the local water treatment plant. Last month, the community declared a state of emergency after sea water infiltrated the facility, halting its ability to produce safe drinking water. Although the state of emergency was lifted within a week, officials advised residents that the tap water remained unsafe for drinking, even after boiling or filtering.

Under the current advisories, residents are instructed to boil water used for drinking, preparing juices or infant formula, cooking, brushing teeth, and washing fruits and vegetables. The health department emphasizes the importance of this measure to ensure public safety.

Officials have assured the community that updates will be provided when the boil water advisory is lifted, allowing residents to return to normal usage of their water supply. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by remote communities in maintaining access to safe drinking water.

As residents navigate these restrictions, local leaders are working closely with the health department to monitor the situation and implement necessary improvements at the water treatment facility.
