Residents of Langley City are invited to participate in shaping a new performing arts and cultural centre planned for a site adjacent to City Hall and the Timms Community Centre. Applications for an eight-member task group will be accepted until January 9, allowing community members to contribute to the project’s business and fundraising strategy.

The newly formed task group will focus on several key objectives. Its responsibilities include identifying potential partners such as individuals, corporations, foundations, and developers, along with establishing a governance model for the centre’s operation. The group will also seek to engage in partnerships with local First Nations, enhancing the project’s community connections.

Chaired by two non-voting members of the city council, the group will include representatives from the Langley School Board, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the Langley Arts Council, the Langley Community Music School, Kwantlen First Nation, and the local theatre community. This diverse representation aims to ensure that a wide range of perspectives and expertise inform the planning process.

The proposed cultural centre will feature a more intimate setting compared to the recently announced facility in Langley Township, which will accommodate up to 1,500 seats. In contrast, Langley City’s centre is designed for approximately 500 seats, aiming to create a more personal experience for attendees.

In addition to the task group, Langley City is also seeking applicants for 24 vacancies across seven other advisory committees. These include the advisory design panel, which advises the council on the urban design quality of new developments in anticipation of the upcoming SkyTrain project. Other committees looking for members are the environmental sustainability committee, the arts, recreation, culture and heritage committee, the crime prevention committee, the accessibility advisory committee, the socio-cultural and economic development committee, and the board of variance.

A social media announcement highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “Help shape the future of Langley City.” The city encourages residents from various backgrounds and experiences to apply, emphasizing the value of diverse perspectives in the decision-making process.

Applications for both the task group and advisory committee positions can be submitted online at www.langleycity.ca/city-hall/city-council/advisory-committees. The deadline for applications is January 9, providing a vital opportunity for residents to influence the creative landscape of Langley City.
