New Extortion Task Force Investigates Shooting in Surrey, B.C.
Authorities in Surrey, British Columbia, are investigating a shooting incident at a local business in the Metro Vancouver area. The shooting was reported on Tuesday after staff from the establishment in the 13000 block of 76 Avenue discovered damage consistent with gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
Investigators confirmed that an exterior door of the business showed signs of having been struck by bullets, likely during the previous night. The newly formed provincial extortion task force is leading the investigation, indicating the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating this case.
Background on the Extortion Task Force
The task force was launched on September 17, 2025, following a concerning trend of extortion and related violent incidents, particularly affecting the South Asian community in the region. In a proactive move, Surrey’s mayor announced a $250,000 reward fund aimed at encouraging individuals to come forward with information that could lead to convictions in ongoing extortion investigations. At the time of the announcement, police were actively looking into 44 extortion cases, including 27 shootings.
In a related development, Abbotsford, B.C., has also established its own extortion task force after reporting 38 similar cases since November 2023. These initiatives highlight a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies in the region to address the growing issue of extortion and violence.
Community Impact and Response
The formation of these task forces underscores the urgent need for community safety and the protection of local businesses. Residents and business owners are increasingly concerned about their security, prompting police to enhance their investigative capabilities. The cooperation between municipalities is a critical step in tackling the rising tide of extortion-related crimes.
As the investigation progresses, authorities encourage anyone with information to assist in resolving these troubling incidents. The involvement of the community will be pivotal in restoring a sense of safety and security to Surrey and surrounding areas.
This report was first published by The Canadian Press on September 30, 2025. As developments unfold, officials remain committed to addressing the challenges posed by extortion and violence in the community.
