Oak Bay to Begin McNeill Avenue Construction on October 1
Construction work on McNeill Avenue in Oak Bay is scheduled to commence on October 1. This project will focus on replacing essential underground utilities over a stretch of 1,250 metres between Foul Bay Road and Transit Avenue.
The initiative, known as the McNeill Avenue Utility Replacement and Traffic Calming project, encompasses not only the replacement of underground utilities but also enhancements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. The upgrades will include 124 metres of sanitary sewer and 122 metres of storm main along McNeill Avenue.
Project Overview and Objectives
“This project emphasizes a full-corridor approach, where we’re both replacing the underground utilities followed by improving pedestrian and cycling infrastructure,” stated Steve Rennick, Director of Engineering and Public Works for the District of Oak Bay. The improvements aim to bolster safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and residents. The traffic calming measures will enhance access to important destinations, including Oak Bay Village and Windsor Park, while addressing safety concerns.
The project aligns with Oak Bay’s Active Transportation Plan, which focuses on promoting non-motorized transport. Planned enhancements include pavement markings known as sharrows to improve cycling safety, raised crosswalks, and bump-outs to better define pedestrian areas.
Impact on Residents and Timeline
During the construction period, crews will ensure access for residents, emergency services, and waste removal operations. Municipal authorities will communicate any changes to street parking, road closures, and detours directly to affected residents.
The construction is expected to be completed by summer 2026, and updates regarding the project will be made available on the municipality’s official website. This proactive approach aims to keep the community informed and engaged throughout the construction process.
As Oak Bay progresses with this vital infrastructure project, the focus remains on enhancing safety and accessibility for all users of McNeill Avenue.
