OC Transpo Union Secures Tentative Agreement with Employer
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 279, which represents drivers and mechanics at OC Transpo, has reached a tentative agreement with the employer just before the deadline of conciliation. The negotiating committee announced on Saturday that a deal was finalized overnight, marking the conclusion of a 21-day bargaining process.
ATU Local 279 President Noah Vineberg stated, “Today, we will review the details of this agreement with our legal team, our negotiating committee, and our international vice president.” Once the agreement is signed, the next steps involve arranging a venue for the contract reading and presentation to the union membership, followed by a vote to ratify the deal.
The previous contract had been in effect from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2025. During negotiations, the union raised concerns regarding the disparity in earnings between managerial staff and front-line workers. A memo dated May 28 highlighted that managers at OC Transpo had experienced an 18 percent increase in salaries over the past decade, while front-line workers saw only an 8 percent rise.
Vineberg emphasized the inequity, noting, “Managers, who are in decision-making roles, have been receiving substantial benefits and significant pay rises even when the performance outcomes might not align with the organization’s expectations.” He contrasted this with the conditions faced by front-line workers, who continue to operate under challenging circumstances without adequate compensation.
In May, union members presented a petition to the city council, advocating for a collective agreement that would address issues such as higher wages, better working conditions, and improved work-life balance. The specifics of the tentative agreement have not yet been disclosed, but the union’s leadership is optimistic about its potential impact on their members.
As the review process unfolds, union members will await further updates and the opportunity to participate in the vote regarding the agreement. This development signals a crucial step forward in negotiations between the union and OC Transpo, reflecting ongoing efforts to achieve fair compensation and working conditions for transit employees.
