Premier Scott Moe Pursues Trade Opportunities in China

Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan is embarking on a significant trade mission to China, aiming to create new opportunities for local producers. This announcement comes alongside his commitment to support northern communities affected by wildfires earlier this summer. The trip is set to take place in the coming days, with a focus on addressing the challenges posed by recent tariffs imposed by China.
Earlier this year, China introduced tariffs of 75.8 percent on canola seed and 100 percent on canola oil and meal. These measures have raised concerns among Saskatchewan farmers, and Moe’s visit aims to foster discussions that could lead to improved market access.
Moe highlighted the importance of representing not only Saskatchewan but also the broader Canadian agriculture sector, which employs around 300,000 people and generates between $40 to $45 billion annually. “I will be representing not only Saskatchewan but the community of growers and Canadian agriculture industry, more broadly,” Moe stated during a press conference in Saskatoon.
Collaboration with the Federal Government
Moe emphasized the collaborative efforts between the provincial and federal governments to enhance the representation of Saskatchewan’s canola industry in international markets. He expressed confidence that the discussions in China could open doors to conversations with other countries, including India. “This is not an ‘us’ and ‘they’… it certainly is a ‘we’. We’re working closely with [the federal government],” he noted.
The premier’s agenda is not solely focused on trade; he is also actively addressing the aftermath of the wildfires that devastated the community of Denare Beach. The wildfires have displaced children from their homes, forcing some to attend classes in nearby communities such as Creighton.
Moe acknowledged the significant loss experienced by residents, stating, “What I would say with respect to the supports that were provided to that community… we faced a very brutal fire season.” He confirmed that the provincial government has allocated $20 million to initiate cleanup efforts and support reconstruction in affected areas.
Ongoing Support for Affected Communities
Despite criticism from the New Democratic Party (NDP) regarding the government’s response to the wildfires, Moe defended his administration’s commitment to supporting residents across Saskatchewan. “By no means has this government not been there to support Saskatchewan residents… who have faced significant loss with what was a very vicious fire season,” he stated.
In the coming weeks, Moe plans to continue visiting affected communities, ensuring that support remains a priority. His dual focus on international trade and local recovery highlights the provincial government’s strategy to balance immediate community needs with long-term economic goals.
As Premier Moe prepares for his trip to China, he remains optimistic about the potential outcomes for Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector and the vital support needed for communities recovering from the devastating impacts of wildfires.
