Proposal for Double-Decker Highway Aims to Ease North Shore Traffic
A North Vancouver resident has proposed a solution to the ongoing traffic congestion affecting the North Shore, suggesting the construction of a double-decker highway above the existing Highway 1. In a letter to the editor, Michael Smith outlined his vision for a cost-effective approach that would utilize the airspace above the highway without altering its current footprint.
Smith argues that adding an upper deck to Highway 1 could effectively double the highway’s capacity to handle traffic. This construction strategy has been employed in various countries and could be implemented with minimal environmental impact. By creating a two-tiered highway, the lower deck could be designated for traffic in one direction, while the upper deck would accommodate vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.
Alternatively, Smith suggests that a more economical option might involve maintaining the existing traffic flow on the lower deck, which currently serves both directions. The upper deck would then be utilized primarily for bypass traffic, allowing for a more streamlined flow of vehicles traveling to and from the District, North Vancouver, and West Vancouver.
In addition to the highway proposal, Smith recommends the integration of a SkyTrain system on the upper level, with stations strategically spaced over the bridges and connecting to major transportation hubs. This system could feature stairs and elevators linking to various bus routes on the lower level, further enhancing public transport accessibility.
The need for improved transportation infrastructure on the North Shore has been a pressing issue for years. Recent discussions have centered around the potential construction of a third bridge to alleviate traffic congestion. However, Smith’s letter highlights an alternative approach that focuses on enhancing existing infrastructure rather than expanding it.
As urban areas continue to grow, innovative solutions like the proposed double-decker highway could play a significant role in addressing transportation challenges. The success of such initiatives will ultimately depend on public support, funding, and the collaboration of local government authorities.
The conversation around transportation solutions on the North Shore is ongoing, and community input remains crucial. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their thoughts on this proposal and other ideas to improve traffic conditions in the region.
