Trump Envoy Advances US Minerals Agenda During Uzbekistan Visit

A representative from the Trump administration is currently in Uzbekistan, aiming to promote the United States’ strategic interests in critical minerals. Paolo Zampolli, the White House’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, arrived in Tashkent on August 28, 2025, with the objective of fostering lasting relationships that enhance US diplomatic efforts. This visit aligns with the administration’s approach to strengthen trade ties and improve access to the country’s rich mineral resources.
Upon his arrival, Zampolli held discussions with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Their meeting focused on expanding the strategic partnership between the US and Uzbekistan, as well as exploring avenues for multifaceted cooperation. A statement from the Uzbek president’s office highlighted the “constructive political dialogue” that is currently developing. It also noted the significant potential for collaboration in various sectors, including mineral resources, aviation, electrical engineering, agriculture, digital technologies, and finance.
Strengthening Diplomatic Engagement
In recent months, the diplomatic engagement between the United States and Uzbekistan has intensified. Jonathan Henick, the US envoy in Tashkent, reported in April that there has been an “unprecedented level” of interaction between the two nations. This visit by Zampolli further underscores the US commitment to enhancing its presence in Central Asia.
Zampolli’s agenda also includes participation in several public diplomacy initiatives aimed at improving the US image in Uzbekistan. These activities encompass joining President Mirziyoyev in celebrations for Uzbek Independence Day, engaging with the Uzbek national soccer team—preparing for the upcoming World Cup tournament in the United States—and attending the opening of American Corner Tashkent, a venue dedicated to promoting American values and culture.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
The emphasis on critical minerals is part of a broader strategy by the US to secure essential resources that are vital for various technologies, including renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. Uzbekistan is known for its vast mineral wealth, positioning it as a significant player in the global supply chain for these materials.
Zampolli, a long-time business associate of former President Donald Trump and the former ambassador of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica to the United Nations, brings a wealth of experience to this role. His visit is expected to pave the way for increased American investment in Uzbekistan, particularly in sectors crucial to both nations’ economic interests.
The developments in Uzbekistan reflect a growing recognition of the region’s strategic importance and a commitment to fostering deeper bilateral relations. As Zampolli continues his engagements, the potential for enhanced cooperation in critical minerals and beyond remains a focal point of US foreign policy in Central Asia.
