Algoma University and Sault College are actively collaborating to assist approximately 1,000 Algoma Steel workers who face job losses in March 2024. The steelmaker announced these significant job cuts earlier this month, prompting a proactive response from the local educational institutions.

During a board of governors meeting on December 11, 2023, Sault College’s interim president, Sherri Smith, stated, “We’re working on some initial ideas” to support affected workers. The two institutions plan to partner with the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Canadian Skills Training and Employment Centre to create pathways for retraining and employment opportunities.

Initial Strategies Under Development

While it is “too early” to gauge how many steelworkers might seek assistance, Smith anticipates a diverse group will look for training opportunities. “I would anticipate we’re going to have a range of individuals looking for training opportunities,” she said. Various sectors, including trades and technology, health care, and community services, are in need of workers, making this a timely initiative.

Sault College has already begun highlighting its various programs and services through information sessions specifically designed for steelworkers. A career-focused event is scheduled for February 2024, which aims to connect laid-off workers with programs, services, and potential employers. Spokesperson Stephanie Pagnucco stated that this event will facilitate opportunities for workers to explore new career paths and upskilling options.

In fact, outreach efforts have successfully led to at least one Algoma Steel worker enrolling in Sault College’s newly launched plumbing techniques program for the upcoming September term. This initiative is part of broader discussions with local leaders and funding agencies regarding new projects that aim to bolster skilled trades training and attract capital investments to enhance regional capacity.

Shared Commitment to Community Support

The overarching goal of this collaboration is to ensure that affected workers have clear pathways into in-demand fields as the community addresses the economic impact of the layoffs. Smith and Sheila Embleton, interim president at Algoma University, engage in weekly discussions to strengthen the partnership between the two schools, demonstrating a united front in support of the steelworkers.

A university spokesperson highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “By speaking together, the presidents of Algoma University and Sault College are underscoring a shared commitment to stand with Algoma Steel employees and their families during this challenging time.” This coordinated effort emphasizes that local post-secondary institutions are ready and aligned to assist affected workers.

In addition to training opportunities, Algoma University is also providing support through advising and resource navigation, collaborating with community and government partners to maximize assistance for those impacted by the layoffs. The collective effort reflects a commitment to not only address immediate employment concerns but also to foster long-term economic resilience in the region.
