The Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts 2026 officially opened on Friday night at the Aurora Cultural Centre, showcasing the creative talents of Grade 12 students from various local high schools. The event features over 200 artworks created by more than 65 students from schools including Aurora High School, Cardinal Carter Catholic High School, Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School, ESC Renaissance, St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School, St. Andrew’s College, and, for the first time, St. Anne’s School. The exhibition runs until April 19, 2026.

Mayor Tom Mrakas addressed attendees, including local dignitaries, parents, and art enthusiasts, emphasizing the importance of creativity in shaping society. “Throughout the years, we’ve seen so many incredible pieces line the walls at Town Hall, and now here at Town Square. This year, over 200 pieces by more than 65 students will become part of that legacy,” he stated during the grand opening reception.

The Mayor expressed his admiration for the students’ talents, noting, “I had the opportunity to meet many of these wonderful students last Friday as the artwork was being installed. I’m so encouraged by how smart, talented, and thoughtful they are. It gives me great hope for the future.”

Mr. Mrakas was joined at the event by Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MPP Michael Parsa, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy, and Ward 3 Councillor Wendy Gaertner, who interacted with students and engaged in discussions about their creative processes.

The Mayor highlighted the community’s commitment to arts and culture, stating, “Aurora really is a town that values arts and culture because we know how deeply it enriches our lives. Art brings people together. It helps us see the world in new ways.” He encouraged students to continue their artistic journeys, saying, “No matter where life takes you, I hope you keep creating. Keep pushing boundaries.”

The event also featured remarks from Rossy Bustamente of ROCA Financial Solutions, who spoke as one of the event’s sponsors. Bustamente, a former fashion designer, drew connections between the fields of art and finance. “Art and finance are ultimately about people. They are about identity, confidence, and possibility. I am deeply passionate about supporting the community,” she explained.

Bustamente shared her personal journey, stating, “I began my career when I was 27 years old. Everything I have been able to achieve is thanks to my mentors and sponsors who supported me along the way.” She emphasized the importance of supporting young artists, saying, “When we support art, we support expression, confidence, and future possibilities, especially for our youth.”

This year’s exhibition features a diverse array of artists, including Cassandra Almeida, Gabrielle Awoyemi, and Sophie Baruco, among many others. Their works reflect a wide range of styles and themes, showcasing the vibrant artistic community within Aurora.
