The latest standardized testing results from the Bluewater District School Board (BDSB) show considerable improvements in student performance, as reported by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). The data highlights notable year-over-year gains in literacy and mathematics across various grades within Bruce and Grey counties.

According to BDSB, the most significant advancements were observed in the Grade 3 assessments. In reading, the percentage of students meeting the provincial standard increased to 68 percent in 2024-25, up from 62 percent in 2022-23. Writing scores also saw a rise, climbing from 50 percent to 57 percent during the same timeframe. The most remarkable growth occurred in mathematics, where results surged from 48 percent three years ago to 62 percent this year.

Progress Continues Through Grades 6 and 9

At the Grade 6 level, improvements persisted but at a slower pace. Reading scores increased to 79 percent this year, up from 76 percent in both previous years. Writing results also improved, rising from 73 percent in 2022-23 to 78 percent in 2024-25. Conversely, mathematics outcomes remained unchanged at 39 percent for the third consecutive year.

In Grade 9 mathematics, the results dipped slightly to 49 percent in 2024-25, down from 52 percent the previous year, although still above the 48 percent recorded in 2022-23. For Grade 10 students taking the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, the success rate fell from 86 percent last year to 82 percent. Despite this decline, the current figure remains higher than the 75 percent success rate reported in 2022-23.

Closing the Achievement Gap

While BDSB acknowledges that its overall results still fall short of provincial averages, the board emphasizes that the gap is narrowing, particularly in the primary grades where the largest gains in reading, writing, and mathematics have been achieved. Superintendent of Education Keith Lefebvre stated, “These results are a testament to the dedication and resilience of our students, educators, and school communities.” He further noted that the progress reflects ongoing efforts to implement evidence-based instruction and targeted support, with a commitment to further improvement and closing achievement gaps throughout the district.

The Bluewater District School Board comprises approximately 41 elementary schools and nine secondary schools, serving students in Bruce and Grey counties. As the board continues to monitor progress, the focus remains on enhancing educational outcomes and fostering an environment conducive to student success.
