Brandon School Division Superintendent Mathew Gustafson to Retire

Mathew Gustafson, the superintendent of the Brandon School Division, has announced his retirement, effective August 7, 2026. This decision was officially communicated during a board meeting on Tuesday night, where board chair Linda Ross read Gustafson’s resignation letter to the members present.

In the letter, Gustafson expressed his deep commitment to the division, stating, “It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division. I am honoured to have been able to serve the students, parents, and staff of the Brandon School Division since 2002.” His tenure has spanned over two decades, during which he has held various high-level administrative positions, including his role as superintendent since early 2021.

Gustafson emphasized that his decision to retire was made after considerable reflection. Following the meeting, he noted, “At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over. This allows me to do some different things and still support education in other ways.” He chose to announce his retirement well in advance to provide the board ample time to identify his successor.

As a leader, Gustafson highlighted the importance of collaboration, attributing his accomplishments to the dedication of his colleagues. “I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff,” he remarked. His leadership has significantly impacted the experiences of students and staff within the division, a sentiment he hopes will leave lasting positive memories.

Gustafson’s commitment to the community does not end with his retirement. He shared plans to remain active, even joking about helping his brother-in-law with farming duties in the fall. “I also hope to volunteer and maybe stay involved in education in some way,” he added.

During the board meeting, Ross praised Gustafson’s steady leadership and unwavering dedication. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” she stated. “It has been a pleasure working with you, and we’re very appreciative — even if I’d like to curse you a little for resigning.”

Deputy chair Duncan Ross described Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency,” acknowledging his reliability throughout his tenure. Trustee Kim Fallis commended his preparedness, saying, “You were always ready with the answers we needed. Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”

Gustafson’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for the Brandon School Division, as the community prepares for the transition to new leadership. His legacy will undoubtedly influence the division’s future direction and the educational experiences of its students.
