Brandon University and Assiniboine College Host Engaging Events

Brandon University and Assiniboine College are bustling with a range of events this week, offering opportunities for students and the community to engage in art, music, and cultural storytelling. On December 1, 2025, several activities are scheduled that showcase the talents of students and faculty while fostering community spirit.

Kevin McKenzie, an assistant professor at Brandon University, will present as part of the IshKaabatens Waasa Gaa Inaabateg Department of Visual Art Speaker Series today at 11:30 a.m. McKenzie brings three decades of experience in art, with his work featured in collections such as the National Art Gallery of Canada and the MacKenzie Art Gallery.

The university’s sports scene is also active despite the conclusion of fall schedules for the Bobcats. The Healthy Living Centre will host the Holiday Hoops Camp tonight from 18:00 to 20:00. Open to youth from Grades 3 to 10, this co-ed camp encourages participation from all experience levels, with registration available through a monetary donation or a new, unwrapped toy. This week, several musical ensembles from Brandon University are set to perform. The BU Brass Ensemble will present a Christmas concert tonight at 19:30 in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Following that, the BU Concert Choir and BU Chorale will perform on December 4 at 19:30 at Knox United Church. The Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art is currently showcasing student work from four courses, with gallery hours running from 12:30 to 16:30, Wednesday through Saturday. This exhibition highlights the creativity and talent of Brandon University’s visual arts students.

In theatrical offerings, Brandon University Theatre is presenting “Mother Courage and her Children,” a dark comedy with music, from December 3 to 7. At Assiniboine College, the community is invited to participate in Storytelling Week from December 1 to 5. Each day will feature elders and speakers sharing personal stories and cultural narratives, offering insights into their lives and the significance of storytelling. This week, Assiniboine College will also host its popular Holiday Buffet, which has already sold out. Future events at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts will be announced on their website. Additionally, a Trades Program Mixer is scheduled for December 4 from 16:00 to 17:30 at the Mazer Group Main Street in the Len Evans Centre for Trades & Technology at the North Hill campus.

The college’s Alumni Association is preparing for the annual Retiree Holiday Coffee Party on December 10 at the Victoria Avenue East campus, starting at 09:30. More details about this gathering can also be obtained at assiniboine.net/events.
