Brandon University Hosts Events on Community and Wellness This Week

Brandon University is set to host several significant events this week, fostering community engagement and raising awareness around important social issues. The first highlight is the Take Back the Night March, scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2025, which will commence at Princess Park at 18:00 and conclude at the Mingling Area in the Knowles-Douglas Students’ Union Centre. This march aims to address and combat violence against women and create a safe space for discussions surrounding this critical issue.
In conjunction with the march, an art exhibition titled “Shift/Work: Portraits of Precarity” will open at 7 p.m. on the same evening in the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. This exhibition showcases layered paintings, three-dimensional elements, sound collages, and drawings that reflect the experiences of individuals facing precarious employment. The artist, Lisa Wood, along with research assistants Renata Truelove, Michael Vachon, and Dhairya Vaidya, will conduct a walkthrough of the exhibition at its opening, encouraging dialogue about the themes presented.
The academic community will also engage in discussions on environmental topics. On Friday, October 7, at 14:30, Masoud Goharrokhi from the University of Manitoba will lead a talk on the history, current state, and future significance of Netley Marsh in relation to Lake Winnipeg. This seminar will be held in Room 4-47 of the Brodie building and will be accessible online for those unable to attend in person. Individuals interested in the event can reach out via email at [email protected] for further information.
In sports, the Bobcats men’s volleyball team is representing Canada at the NORCECA Final Six championship in Puerto Rico this week. The Bobcats earned this opportunity by clinching the U SPORTS national championship in the spring. The tournament runs from October 6 to October 8.
On the local sports scene, the BU soccer teams will host Université de Saint-Boniface at Cougars Field on Sunday, October 8. The women’s match is scheduled to kick off at 13:00, followed by the men’s match at 15:15.
Brandon University will observe Thanksgiving on October 13, and while the campus will be closed, the Healthy Living Centre will remain open from 11:00 to 19:00 for those seeking wellness activities.
At Assiniboine College, a series of wellness events titled Fill your Cup aims to promote self-care and mental health among students and staff. These events are free and designed to provide resources for rejuvenating mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Interested participants can find more information at assiniboine.net/events.
Additionally, the Assiniboine College Students’ Association is organizing a North Hill Breakfast Day on Tuesday, October 10, from 08:00 to 09:00. This event will offer complimentary breakfast treats to students and staff at the Len Evans Centre.
On Wednesday, October 11, Volunteer Manitoba will host a recruitment fair at the Victoria Campus, providing an opportunity for students to engage with local volunteer organizations. This fair will take place from 10:00 to 14:00 in the ACSA Event Space.
Tickets for the Assiniboine Advancement Dinner are now available, celebrating the achievements of the college and honoring this year’s award recipients. More details can be found at assiniboine.net/events.
As the week progresses, both Brandon University and Assiniboine College are actively engaging their communities through various events, promoting wellness, awareness, and collaboration among students and staff alike.
