Brandon University is set to host a series of significant events this week, including the annual Take Back the Night March on October 6. The march, aimed at raising awareness about violence against women, will commence at Princess Park at 18:00 and conclude at the Mingling Area in the Knowles-Douglas Students’ Union Centre. Attendees are encouraged to participate in this important community event.

The festivities continue with the opening of the art exhibition “Shift/Work: Portraits of Precarity” on the same evening at 19:00 in the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. This exhibition features a range of artistic expressions, including layered paintings, three-dimensional elements, sound collages, and drawings that highlight the experiences of individuals facing precarious employment. Artists Lisa Wood and her research assistants, Renata Truelove, Michael Vachon, and Dhairya Vaidya, will guide attendees through the exhibition during the opening event.

On October 7, the Science Seminar Series will feature Masoud Goharrokhi from the University of Manitoba. His presentation will focus on the historical and ecological significance of Netley Marsh and its impact on Lake Winnipeg. Scheduled for 14:30 in Room 4-47 of the Brodie building, the talk will also be accessible online for those unable to attend in person. Interested participants can reach out via email to [email protected] for further details.

In sports, the Brandon Bobcats men’s volleyball team is in Puerto Rico this week, representing Canada at the NORCECA Final Six championship. Having qualified by winning the U SPORTS national championship earlier this year, the team will compete from October 6 to 8.

Meanwhile, the BU soccer teams are preparing to face Université de Saint-Boniface on October 8 at Cougars Field. The women’s match is set to kick off at 13:00, followed by the men’s game at 15:15.

Brandon University will observe a closure on October 13 in observance of Thanksgiving. The Healthy Living Centre will remain open from 11:00 to 19:00 on that day.

At Assiniboine College, a wellness event series titled “Fill your Cup” is promoting self-care and connection among students. These events are free and aim to enhance mental, emotional, and physical health through community resources.

Additionally, the Assiniboine College Students’ Association will host a breakfast event on October 10 from 08:00 to 09:00 in the Len Evans Centre, celebrating North Hill Breakfast Day. A volunteer recruitment fair will take place on campus on October 11, featuring Volunteer Manitoba from 10:00 to 14:00 in the ACSA Event Space at Victoria Campus.

Tickets are now available for the Assiniboine Advancement Dinner, which honors the achievements of alumni and celebrates the college’s growth. The dinner will recognize this year’s award recipients whose contributions have left a significant impact across Manitoba and beyond.

In athletics, the Cougars women’s and men’s soccer teams will host USB Les Rouges on October 7 before traveling to Winnipeg for further matches on October 8. For complete game schedules, visit assiniboine.net/athletics.
