Campbell River: A Year-Round Fishing Haven for Locals and Tourists
The Campbell River in British Columbia has become a prominent destination for fishing enthusiasts, drawing both locals and tourists throughout the year. Its accessibility sets it apart from many other regions in Canada and globally, offering a unique fishing experience that remains highly valued by those who live nearby.
Last summer, a group of American anglers visited the area specifically to see the Haig-Brown House, a site of significance for fishing culture. They took numerous photographs of both the house and the river, treating the visit as a pilgrimage to a revered location. For these anglers, spending time fishing in Campbell River constituted a dream come true.
Fishing Community and Seasonal Visitors
Since relocating to Campbell River for work in 2006, I have witnessed the vibrant local fishing community. The river is a hub for anglers, where seasoned fishermen share their expertise and techniques. Observing experienced fishermen casting fly patterns provided a thrilling introduction to the local fishing culture.
Many local guides cater to international visitors, particularly those from Europe, who arrive to fish for steelhead during the winter months. As regulations evolve, some dedicated anglers are opting to remain closer to home, but the anticipation of new visitors persists. Tourists from Germany are expected to arrive soon, drawn to the river due to limited fishing opportunities in their own country.
In addition to the Campbell River, the Elk River offers catch-and-release trout fishing, attracting anglers from the Mainland and South Island who wish to experience the region’s diverse fishing opportunities. The enthusiasm for fishing also spans generations, with many older anglers taking their grandchildren out to impart valuable knowledge about fly fishing techniques.
Winter Fishing and Upcoming Events
As February unfolds, local fishermen are actively pursuing salmon, despite the winter weather. Many have reported successful outings, with two salmon caught in a day considered an excellent achievement at this time of year.
Looking ahead, the Vancouver Island Regional Library in Campbell River will host a free workshop titled “Fly-Tying for Beginners” on February 28, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event is open to all ages, with materials provided. Participants will learn about effective fly patterns suitable for local rivers and lakes, further enriching the community’s fishing culture.
With its blend of accessibility, rich history, and vibrant community, Campbell River continues to be a cherished location for fishing enthusiasts, offering a unique experience that captivates both local residents and visitors alike.
