College of the Rockies Launches Gasfitter Class B Level 2 Program
The College of the Rockies (COTR) is set to enhance its trades training offerings with the introduction of the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program, commencing in January 2026. This initiative aims to meet the growing employment demands for gasfitters in the Kootenay region and throughout British Columbia, where the trade has shown a consistent need for skilled professionals.
“Gasfitter – Class B became a Red Seal trade in B.C. in January 2025,” explained Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dean of Trades and Technology at COTR. “Individuals entering this field will require both a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement from SkilledTradesBC and a Certificate of Qualification from Technical Safety BC.” The Gasfitter Class B program at COTR provides ten weeks of essential technical training, preparing students to sit for the Technical Safety BC Certificate of Qualification exam.
Gasfitters Class B are responsible for designing, installing, repairing, and maintaining propane and natural gas systems across various environments, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This profession is particularly suited for individuals who possess strong mathematical skills, the ability to work effectively under pressure, and a dedication to safety and precision.
For students who have completed the provincial Plumber Apprenticeship program, whether at COTR or another institution, the college grants credit for 1,500 of the required 3,000 workplace hours. Additionally, those who have already completed Gasfitter Class B Level 1 are eligible to enroll directly in the Level 2 program starting in January.
The Gasfitter Class B program offers a promising career path, with steady employment opportunities across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. When combined with additional training in plumbing or HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), graduates can enjoy even greater flexibility in the job market.
Applications for the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program are currently open. For more information, interested individuals can visit the COTR website at cotr.bc.ca/gasfitter.
With this new program, COTR is poised to support the growth of skilled trades in the region and contribute to the ongoing demand for qualified gasfitters in British Columbia.
