DeKalb Event Connects Colleges and Businesses for Economic Growth
The DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) is set to host its annual breakfast aimed at fostering connections among community leaders, educators, and business partners. This event, scheduled for December 2, 2023, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., will take place at Faranda’s, located at 302 Grove St., DeKalb. Participants will have the opportunity to network and engage with stakeholders from various sectors across the county, enhancing collaborative efforts for regional economic growth.
A pivotal feature of the breakfast will be a fireside chat titled “Collaboration and Connection in Action: Powering Economic Growth and Strengthening Communities.” This conversation will commence at 9:15 a.m. and will include prominent leaders from local higher education institutions. Among the speakers are Lisa Freeman, President of Northern Illinois University; Laurie Borowicz, President of Kishwaukee College; and Brian Knetl, President of Waubonsee Community College. The session will be moderated by Melissa Amedeo, Executive Director of DCEDC.
The discussion will focus on the collaborative efforts of colleges to align local professional development with broader economic impacts at both the state and regional levels. Additionally, the leaders will address strategies to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the job market.
In a statement, Amedeo emphasized the importance of educational investment, stating, “When we invest in learning at every level, beginning with pre-Kindergarten, we have the power to create opportunities, not just for individuals, but for our entire community.” She further highlighted that pathways to meaningful careers can be established through various educational avenues, including four-year universities, community colleges, apprenticeship programs, and certification courses. This, she noted, ultimately contributes to the strengthening of neighborhoods and promotes long-term economic stability and growth.
At 10:00 a.m., Amedeo will present DCEDC’s annual report, detailing key accomplishments and providing updates on major economic development initiatives. The report will also outline the organization’s priorities leading into 2026.
For those interested in attending, further details and registration can be found at DCEDC.org/events. This event represents a significant opportunity for collaboration and dialogue among leaders dedicated to fostering economic development in the DeKalb area.
