Discover Indigenous Crafting at Rattle Making Workshop in Nampa

Residents of Northern Sunrise County can participate in a unique opportunity to learn about Indigenous culture by attending a Rattle Making Workshop on September 24, 2023. The event will take place at the Nampa Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Office from 18:00 to 21:00. Participants will have the chance to create their own traditional Indigenous rattles while also learning songs to accompany their crafted instruments.
The workshop is designed to provide attendees with a deep understanding of the cultural significance of rattles, which are often integral to ceremonies, healing practices, and storytelling within Indigenous traditions. According to FCSS director Amber Houle, the workshop offers a platform for participants to learn directly from Indigenous Knowledge Keepers. “By offering this type of workshop, FCSS provides participants with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with traditional practices and build respect for Indigenous culture,” Houle explained.
Engagement in this workshop is open to both youth and adults aged 16 and older. Houle emphasizes that the session is ideal for anyone seeking to explore Indigenous culture through a creative and interactive approach. Participants will not only craft their own rattles but will also receive insight into their meaning and significance. “The workshop encourages mindfulness, self-expression, and skill development, while also fostering a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous traditions,” she added.
Rattles can be made using materials such as wood, animal hides, leather, small stones, beads, and various decorative items. The workshop will be led by local Elder Priscilla Lalonde, who will share her expertise and knowledge with attendees.
There is no fee to attend the workshop, but space is limited. Participants are required to register in advance to secure their spot. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided during the event. To register for the Rattle Making Workshop, interested individuals can call (780) 322-3954.
This initiative not only promotes cultural education but also strengthens community ties through shared learning experiences. By engaging in such workshops, residents can appreciate the rich traditions of Indigenous peoples while fostering a greater understanding of their cultural heritage.
