FACE Elementary Students Start Year in New Montreal Facility

Students and staff at FACE Elementary School began the school year on August 28, 2025, in a newly constructed facility located at 4835 Christophe-Colomb Ave in the Plateau region of Montreal. This transition marks a significant milestone for the bilingual institution, which now accommodates both its English and French sectors under one roof.
The school day commenced at 07:45, culminating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at approximately 09:00. This event was attended by key figures from the educational community, including Joe Ortona, Chair of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB), and Commissioner Maria Corsi, who greeted students and staff as they embarked on this new chapter.
Future Developments for FACE High School
While elementary students have moved into the new building, plans for the high school remain in flux. The high school will continue to operate from its original location on University Street for the next several years. This facility requires nearly $400 million in repairs, and a major rehabilitation project has been delayed indefinitely, as confirmed by the province’s education minister.
There are intentions to eventually relocate the high school to the former Sun Youth headquarters and the old Baron Byng High School on St-Urbain Street. The joint operation of FACE by the EMSB and the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM) makes it the only school of its kind in Montreal, further emphasizing the importance of these developments.
Community Support and Challenges
The community has shown strong support for FACE Elementary School, particularly in light of recent challenges. Initiatives like the “Save F.A.C.E.” campaign have rallied parents and students, highlighting concerns over the potential sale of school properties. Demonstrations have included students singing in protest to the Quebec Education Minister and advocating for the preservation of their school environment.
Across the broader EMSB network, students are set to return to classes on Tuesday, September 2. The transition for FACE Elementary represents not only a new physical space but also a vital opportunity for enhancing the educational experience of its students in a unified setting.
This new beginning for FACE Elementary School is more than just a relocation; it signifies the ongoing commitment to bilingual education in Montreal and the community’s dedication to nurturing its young learners.
