Farming Smarter Cultivates Future Leaders in Agriculture
Farming Smarter, an agricultural organization located just outside Lethbridge, Alberta, is making significant strides in shaping the careers of young professionals in the agriculture sector. Many former summer students have transitioned into successful careers, either continuing with the organization or pursuing opportunities elsewhere in agriculture.
Executive Director Ken Coles has witnessed this transformation first-hand over his 19 years at Farming Smarter. He expresses pride in the impact the organization has had on students, stating, “When I think back over the years…the number of students that have come through here and moved on to ag careers is pretty tremendous.” Coles emphasizes the broad scope of work at Farming Smarter, noting that the organization focuses on around 30 to 35 crops and collaborates with various research partners.
Coles, who also runs a mixed grain farm with irrigation near Coaldale, finds joy in seeing students discover their passion for agriculture. “It brings me to tears sometimes…to see that passion,” he reveals. Coles believes that the excitement students experience when they find a purpose in agriculture is monumental, reflecting his own early enthusiasm for the industry.
Student Success Stories
One notable success story is that of Evrett Krippl, who moved from Calgary to southern Alberta to study geography at the University of Lethbridge. Now in his second year with Farming Smarter, Krippl appreciates the variety of research involved in his work. “I really enjoy working outside…and the mix of outdoor work with data computer work,” he explains.
Krippl attributes his ongoing commitment to Farming Smarter to the supportive learning environment it fosters. He points out that recent years have seen many newcomers to agriculture joining the organization, stating, “Farming Smarter does a really good job at teaching new students…about agriculture and building that community with farmers.”
Another former student, George Joseph Jr., completed his agronomy diploma while with Farming Smarter. Although he had an interest in agriculture, he initially lacked practical experience. “For me, everything I did here was brand new,” Joseph Jr. reflects. He highlights the organization’s commitment to education, saying, “They were super helpful at teaching me…how to use equipment and all the information regarding agriculture.”
Building a Future in Agriculture
Farming Smarter’s approach to education and experience is not only transforming individual careers but also contributing to the broader agricultural community. By providing hands-on opportunities and fostering relationships among students, farmers, and industry professionals, the organization is creating a foundation for future leaders in agriculture.
As the demand for skilled professionals in agriculture continues to grow, organizations like Farming Smarter play a crucial role in not only preparing the next generation but also ensuring the sustainability and innovation of the agricultural sector. The success stories of students like Krippl and Joseph Jr. exemplify the potential for growth and impact within this vital industry.
With the continued support and guidance from experienced professionals like Ken Coles, Farming Smarter is poised to cultivate future talent, ensuring that the agricultural landscape remains vibrant and progressive.
