Greater Essex County School Board Moves to Fill Trustee Vacancies

The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) is set to fill two trustee vacancies by appointment, following recent resignations. This decision, made during a board meeting on November 14, 2023, comes as trustees seek to address the governance needs of the local educational landscape.

Trustee Ron LeClair, representing LaSalle-Amherstburg, resigned last month, and the board accepted the resignation of Nancy Armstrong from Leamington-Pelee Island during the same meeting. The board’s approach to filling these positions involves a call for applications from interested candidates. A short interview process is scheduled for December 15, 2023, with successful candidates expected to be appointed the following day at a board meeting.

Malek Mekawi, the trustee for Windsor Wards 3, 4, and 10, introduced the motion for this appointment process. Mekawi noted that this method promotes transparency and efficiency. He himself was appointed through a similar process last year to fill the vacancy left by former trustee Sarah Cipkar.

Trustees discussed various options during their meeting, including appointing the runners-up from the 2022 election. Ultimately, they chose the application process, despite some heated debates and a brief recess before the final vote. Board chair Gale Hatfield acknowledged the challenges posed by recent resignations, stating, “It’s always difficult to accept a resignation from a trustee. But it’s a personal decision, and I can’t judge what’s going on in their life.”

The new trustees will serve for less than a year before the general school board elections, scheduled for October 26, 2026. These elections coincide with municipal elections across the province. Notably, the provincial education minister has indicated that he is considering the elimination of school trustees altogether, with a decision expected by the end of this year. Additionally, a bill that expands provincial powers to take over school boards is scheduled for a final vote at Queen’s Park on November 15, 2023.
