Greater Victoria Libraries Reintroduce 100 Books Reading List for Kids
The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) has reintroduced its popular reading initiative, the 100 Books to Read Before Kindergarten list. This resource aims to assist families in cultivating strong reading habits for young children prior to their formal education. The program had been temporarily paused for review and updates before its relaunch this year.
This list provides parents and caregivers with an organized approach to introduce children to books and reading. According to Vicki Neilson, a librarian with Library Services, reading together is crucial for childhood development. “This list helps take the guesswork out of choosing books, providing a starting point,” Neilson stated in a recent press release.
The reintroduction of the list coincides with a growing demand for early literacy programs within the Greater Victoria area. In 2025 alone, over 13,700 children and caregivers participated in various initiatives, including Baby Time, Family Storytime, and StoryWalk programs.
Neilson added, “Our program attendance shows how eager families and caregivers are to connect through reading. This list builds on that momentum by helping extend those experiences into everyday life, including mealtimes.”
Connecting Families Through Literacy
The timing of this relaunch is especially significant, as it aligns with Family Literacy Week, taking place from January 26 to 31, 2025. To celebrate, GVPL will host StoryWalks at the Central Branch on January 29 and at the Juan de Fuca Branch on January 31. Additionally, drop-in literacy activities will be available at various library locations during this week.
Families interested in the reading list can obtain a free printed copy at any GVPL branch or download it online via the library’s website. This initiative not only encourages children to read but also reinforces the important role that families play in fostering a love of literature from an early age.
This renewed emphasis on early literacy is indicative of GVPL’s commitment to supporting community engagement through reading, ensuring that families have access to resources that promote educational development and shared experiences.
