As the last long weekend of summer approaches, Halifax gears up for Labour Day on September 4, 2023. This holiday marks not just a farewell to summer but also a transition back to the school year for many families. With pleasant weather expected, residents can look forward to outdoor activities, although some services will experience closures.

The weather forecast predicts a high of 25°C with abundant sunshine, making it an ideal day for outdoor outings. Fortunately, air quality advisories have been lifted for the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), enhancing the conditions for any planned festivities.

Service Changes and Closures

As residents plan their Labour Day activities, it is important to be aware of the numerous closures and service alterations that may affect their schedules. Most grocery stores will be closed on Monday, including the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC), which will not operate any locations. However, Dartmouth’s Gateway Meat Market, Dave’s Fruit and Vegetable Market, and Wolfville’s Hennigar’s Farm Market will remain open, though they may have reduced hours.

Several shopping malls, such as the Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Sunnyside Mall, will also close for the holiday. In addition, all municipally operated recreational facilities and pools will be closed, marking the end of the season for outdoor pools and splash pads. While local beaches will remain accessible, they will not have lifeguards on duty.

The Emera Oval, a popular outdoor skating and recreational area, will be open from 11:00 to 20:00, contingent on weather conditions. Residents should note that solid waste collection will not occur on Labour Day, with service rescheduled to a later date.

Transportation and City Services

City administrative offices and employment services will close for the holiday, while all branches of the Public Library will not be available to the public. The 311 contact centre will operate but only for urgent matters.

Municipal transit services will follow a holiday schedule, with the Alderney ferry running every half hour. However, there will be no service for the Woodside ferry. In a small concession for holiday revelers, on-street paid parking will be free in Halifax on Monday.

With many families preparing to enjoy the final days of summer, staying informed about these closures and changes will ensure a smooth and enjoyable Labour Day experience.
