The John M. Cuelenaere Public Library in Prince Albert will host a free talk on the history of the Hudson’s Bay Company on September 9, 2023, at 19:00. Led by Connie Gerwing, a board member of the Prince Albert Historical Museum, the event aims to engage the community in local history.

The presentation is part of an initiative to revive a previous Lifelong Learning series that the library offered, according to Vieng Enchanh, the communications and marketing coordinator at the library. Enchanh noted that Gerwing’s experience in organizing talks makes her an ideal presenter for the event.

“Connie was part of the organization that did that,” Enchanh explained. “We thought it would be an interesting way to bring more people into the library.” Gerwing previously presented on the same topic during a Coffee and Conversation session at the museum in 2023, which was well-received.

The relevance of the talk has increased due to the recent closure of Hudson’s Bay stores, which has generated considerable public interest. Enchanh stated, “We were brainstorming and thought this topic would resonate well with the community, especially given the recent news.”

The event will take place in the Mahon Auditorium, and Enchanh expressed hope that the free admission will encourage attendance. “I’m hoping people will come because it’s different and engaging,” she said. “It’s a chance to learn about something they’ve always wanted to know but never had the opportunity.”

Engagement through learning and community connection is a key goal of the event. Enchanh believes that such initiatives can foster insight and discussion among attendees. “It’s about motivating learning and connecting with others,” she added.

Looking ahead, the library has plans for additional events, including a concert during Library Week from October 12 to 18. Enchanh is working to finalize details for this concert, which aims to replicate the success of the “Save Our Seats” concert held in June.

The Hudson’s Bay Company talk promises to be a valuable opportunity for residents to explore local history and engage in meaningful discussions. The library invites everyone to join in this enriching experience on September 9 at 19:00.
