Lethbridge Authorities Urge Caution as Students Return to School
As students prepare to return to school on September 5, 2023, the City of Lethbridge and local police are urging drivers to exercise heightened caution on the roads. With schools reopening, all playground and school zones throughout the city will be regulated to a speed limit of 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. year-round, ensuring a safer environment for children.
Sgt. Tony Ramotowski of the Lethbridge Police Service emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly as children are eager to return to their classrooms. “Slow down and be aware,” he stated. “Kids are excited to get back to school, so make sure you’re aware of your surroundings—watch out for kids that are running out between cars and off the bus.”
To enhance safety, designated safety patrollers will be present around schools, assisting students and parents in crossing streets safely. Sgt. Ramotowski also reminded students to take responsibility for their own safety. “The big thing is crossing the street. Use a marked crosswalk and don’t be distracted,” he advised.
For parents dropping off their children on the first day of school, the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) recommends considering parking further away from the school to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety. This approach not only reduces vehicle density but also encourages students to walk a short distance, promoting a healthy routine as they begin the school year.
With the reopening of schools, the focus remains on creating a secure environment for all road users. Adhering to speed limits and remaining attentive are crucial steps in ensuring that children can navigate their return to school safely. The collaboration between the city, local law enforcement, and community organizations highlights a shared commitment to the well-being of students and families during this transitional time.
