Local Businesses Create Pumpkin Patch for Joliet Students
Special education students from Sator Sanchez and Lynne Thigpen Elementary Schools in Joliet experienced a memorable Halloween celebration with a private pumpkin patch event on October 23, 2023. Over 150 students participated in this unique gathering, designed specifically for those in the Sanchez Adaptive, Behavior, Communication (ABC) program and the Thigpen Living in a Functional Environment (LIFE) program.
The outdoor pop-up pumpkin patches, hosted at both schools, allowed students to select pumpkins for decorating. Family members were invited to join in the festivities, capturing cherished moments through photographs. The event was organized by Joliet Public Schools District 86, which expressed gratitude to local partners for their support.
Community Support Enhances Experience
Konow’s Corn Maze in Homer Glen played a significant role by providing more than 200 pumpkins, along with various decorations and entertainment options for the students. The event featured an array of items including gourds, corn stalks, hay bales, and even a corn kernel pit, ensuring a fun-filled atmosphere.
Several local businesses and community members also contributed to the success of the pumpkin patch. Notable supporters included Gatica Creationz from Romeoville and Tractor Supply Company in Channahon. Additionally, the event saw participation from the family of Sator Sanchez and contributions from District 86 special education teacher Jacelyn Desmarais and Student Services Coordinator Megan Warren.
The pumpkin patch event not only provided a festive experience for students but also highlighted the importance of community collaboration in supporting local education initiatives. As students engaged in selecting and decorating their pumpkins, the event fostered a sense of joy and inclusivity that resonated throughout the schools.
This initiative serves as a reminder of the positive impact that local businesses and community members can have on educational experiences, offering moments of joy and celebration for students with special needs. By coming together, the Joliet community demonstrated its commitment to enriching the lives of all students, ensuring that they can participate in meaningful and enjoyable activities.
