Manitoba Students Return to Class as New School Year Begins
On September 6, 2023, the new school year commenced for the majority of school divisions in Manitoba, welcoming students back after the summer break. According to a list compiled by the provincial government, 22 school divisions began classes on this date, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.
Excitement in the Air as Students Return
“There’s so much excitement in the air,” said Ara Morris, principal of Sargent Park School in the Winnipeg School Division. Morris noted that teachers had been preparing their classrooms and offices for weeks leading up to the opening day. “It’s so fun at the beginning of the year,” she added, highlighting the enthusiasm that permeates the school environment.
While most divisions began classes on Wednesday, some schools in the province have different schedules. Classes are set to start on September 7 or 8 for an additional 14 school divisions, while the Swan Valley School Division will welcome students on September 11.
Building Community Through Unique Greetings
In the spirit of fostering a welcoming atmosphere, Anna Manila, a Grade 1 and 2 teacher at Sargent Park School, has introduced a unique greeting system for her students. Upon entering the classroom, students choose from a variety of greetings displayed on the wall, which include options such as hugs, high-fives, and fist bumps. “It helps build community. It helps make them feel safe and seen and welcome,” Manila explained. This engaging approach is part of her daily routine as she greets her students each morning.
Students also expressed their eagerness to return to school. Shane, a student at Sargent Park School and a school crossing guard, shared his mixed feelings about the end of summer. “I’m most excited about the opportunity that I can get to make more friends, and also to see my friends that I didn’t really get to see during summer break,” he said, reflecting the joy of reconnecting with peers.
The start of the new academic year signifies not only the return of routine but also the chance for students to engage in fresh experiences and friendships. As the halls of Manitoba schools fill with the sounds of laughter and learning, educators and students alike prepare for a year filled with potential and growth.
