Norquest College Job Fair Boosts Student Employment Prospects
Norquest College in Edmonton hosted an innovative job fair on January 23, 2024, designed to enhance employment opportunities for students in a challenging job market. This year’s event took a different approach, providing a comprehensive platform where students could access professional clothing, headshots, resume reviews, and meet potential employers all in one place.
According to Leila Daoud, the college’s spokesperson, previous job fairs primarily featured employers exhibiting booths while students browsed at their leisure. “The results weren’t there… we need to get more in-depth,” Daoud explained. She emphasized the evolving nature of job searches, noting that today’s students must consider their online presence and the impact of artificial intelligence on their applications.
Recognizing the tight job market, which saw the Alberta unemployment rate drop to 6.4 percent in January 2024, Norquest College aimed to equip all students, regardless of their career paths, with the tools necessary to succeed. “We want to give our students the best foot forward,” Daoud stated, highlighting the importance of professional attire and polished resumes.
The job fair also introduced an interactive element through a game developed by students, designed to evaluate LinkedIn profiles using generative AI. Mahbub Mishu, an instructor at Norquest, noted that while students are familiar with LinkedIn, they often lack confidence regarding their photos and bios. “This game will give them an opportunity to select a photo and professional bio that will be attractive to the recruiter,” Mishu said.
Student Connor Greer expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “This is a great opportunity for them to review and see what a good profile looks like.” The job fair exemplifies Norquest College’s commitment to supporting its more than 12,000 full-time students across various programs, including business administration and practical nursing.
As students navigate an uncertain job landscape, events like this job fair provide essential resources and connections, aiming to foster a stronger transition from education to employment in Alberta’s competitive market.
