Nova Scotia Launches Free Online Course for Employed Workers
Labour, Skills, and Immigration Nova Scotia has introduced a free 10-week online course aimed at enhancing the skills of employed individuals. The program, which begins today, consists of ten sessions held on Wednesday evenings from 17:30 to 21:30, focusing on essential tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
The initiative addresses a notable gap in training opportunities for those already in the workforce. According to Lorie Dias, the course instructor, “There’s a lot of opportunities for people who are unemployed to get training, but there’s not a lot of opportunities for people who are employed or self-employed.” This underscores the need for continued education and skills development in an evolving job market.
To qualify for the course, participants must be employed, including those who are self-employed. The government’s rationale for offering this course free of charge is straightforward: improving employee skills contributes to overall business performance. Dias noted, “If we have better workers out in the workforce, that means people are doing well. They’re doing well at their jobs. Businesses are performing better.”
Throughout the course, attendees will explore various features of Google Workspace, including Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. The curriculum not only emphasizes efficiency but also highlights the importance of cybersecurity, as technology advances rapidly. Dias remarked, “The technology is advancing faster than it ever has. So we do have to be safe with it.”
Participants will gain valuable tools to enhance productivity and optimize time management, essential skills in today’s competitive environment. This course is part of a broader initiative offered in September, January, and April across the province, making it accessible to a wide audience.
For individuals interested in enrolling, registration is available at noblbusinessskills.ca. Navigate to LSI Training Opportunities, then Winter 2026, and access the Course Calendar. Dias encourages potential participants by stating, “This is a great opportunity to catch up with what the young kids are using these days.”
As the job market continues to evolve, such initiatives serve as vital resources for workers seeking to remain competitive and effective in their roles.
