Saskatchewan Polytechnic Begins Construction on New Campus
The development of the new Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus at Innovation Place is now underway, marking a significant step forward for the institution. The project will begin with the construction of the Skilled Trades and Technology building, which is currently in the procurement phase. The request-for-proposal process is expected to conclude in November 2024, with a successful team selected shortly thereafter.
This initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities and create a hub for innovation in Saskatoon. Construction is slated to commence in early 2026, though a specific timeline for completion will be confirmed at a later date. Groundbreaking for the project took place at the end of August 2024, with site preparation activities beginning in September.
In support of this ambitious project, the provincial government has committed a substantial $200 million. Premier Scott Moe emphasized that the new campus is set to establish an “innovation corridor” by integrating the resources of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the University of Saskatchewan, and Innovation Place into one cohesive area.
The discussions surrounding the campus location began in 2015, although the provincial government officially announced the capital project in 2023. Back then, Saskatchewan Polytechnic allocated $500,000 for initial functional development and design work. By January 2025, the province had contributed an additional $16 million, with the 2024-2025 provincial budget including $6 million for design and pre-procurement activities.
Currently, the core Saskatoon campus, located on Idylwyld Drive, has been operational since the 1940s as a vocational school. As stated by Larry Rosia, president and CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, this new project is vital for expanding the institution’s capacity to offer programs. Rosia highlighted that the new campus will facilitate the creation of a skilled talent pipeline, which is essential for enhancing the province’s economic competitiveness.
The project aims to replace 11 decentralized and aging buildings with a modern complex designed for learning and research. While no specific completion dates have been announced for the Skilled Trades and Technology building, Innovation Saskatchewan has indicated that a target opening date is anticipated for fall 2029. This timeline includes the completion of renovations to both the concourse at 116 Research Drive and the building at 121 Research Drive.
As the construction progresses, the transition to the new campus is expected to occur gradually over time, ensuring a smooth shift for students and faculty alike. The development of this new facility not only reflects Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s commitment to providing quality education but also signifies a forward-thinking approach to addressing the evolving needs of the workforce in the region.
In summary, the Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus project is a pivotal development for the institution and the broader Saskatoon community. With substantial government investment and a clear vision for innovation, the campus is set to play a critical role in shaping the future of education and economic growth in Saskatchewan.
