Saskatchewan Science Centre Promotes Railway Safety in New Documentary
The Saskatchewan Science Centre hosted a special event on March 14, 2024, aimed at raising awareness about train safety and operations. Attendees gathered in the Kramer IMAX theatre to view a documentary titled Train Time, which explores the complexities of train technology and its significance in modern society.
According to Ryan Holota, Chief Operating Officer of the Saskatchewan Science Centre, many people are unaware of the advancements in train technology. He emphasized that trains now represent one of the most fuel-efficient methods of transporting goods across North America. “They don’t realize that satellite tracking, GPS tracking, adaptive suspensions, and traction control are just some of the features that make modern trains incredibly advanced,” Holota explained.
Connecting Trains to Daily Life
The documentary has been part of a week-long series of special screenings, providing viewers with an insider’s perspective on the operation of freight trains and their vital role in the economy. Hank Neumiller, a sergeant with the CN Police Service in Melville, highlighted the relevance of trains to everyday life. “Everything in a person’s house was on a train at some point, so making that connection between the railway and daily life is huge,” said Neumiller.
The screenings coincided with rail safety week in Canada, which focuses on educating the public about safe practices around railway crossings and operations. Constable Brad Bidulkm from the Canadian Pacific Kansas Limited stressed that while enforcement is essential, education remains the cornerstone of railway safety. “We’re reaching out to every demographic, whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving. Rail safety education is paramount,” he stated.
Statistics and Safety Tips
Statistics from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reveal that there were 896 railway-related accidents in the previous year, resulting in 69 fatalities. This alarming data underscores the need for increased awareness and education regarding safety around railways.
Operation Lifesaver, a Canadian railway safety initiative, provides essential safety tips to the public, such as maintaining a safe distance from railway tracks and being attentive to signage. They also advise individuals to exercise caution and ensure that no trains are approaching before crossing tracks. In case of an emergency, the public is urged to contact the CN emergency line at 1-800-465-9239.
As the Saskatchewan Science Centre continues to educate the community about railway technology and safety, initiatives like the Train Time documentary play a crucial role in fostering a safer environment for everyone around railways.
