As the byelection for the Brandon School Division trustee approaches on October 16, 2023, candidate Shawna Mozdzen emphasizes the importance of student and family support in local schools. With a commitment to fostering inclusive and safe learning environments, Mozdzen is one of seven individuals competing for the Ward 1 trustee seat.

Mozdzen has spent over 15 years in various educational roles across five local schools, gaining firsthand insights into the challenges students face, from academic hurdles to mental health issues. “For me, it’s always been about students and families,” she expressed. “When parents are comfortable in schools, students are more comfortable too. That’s why community and family engagement is so critical.”

Campaign Focus on Inclusion and Communication

Throughout her career, Mozdzen has dedicated herself to advocating for students with diverse learning needs and promoting inclusive practices among educators. Her involvement in school-based committees has further strengthened her commitment to cultural programming and family engagement. She aims to enhance communication between families and schools, ensure adequate mental health resources, and provide teachers with the necessary tools to focus on their core mission: teaching and mentoring.

As a Métis and First Nations woman with ties to Kinosota and Ebb and Flow, Mozdzen brings a unique perspective on reconciliation to the board. “I’m a firm believer that we need to learn about Indigenous culture and the beauty of it, alongside the difficult history, to move toward reconciliation,” she said. “It may take generations, but every step counts. Schools are a key part of that journey.”

Addressing Safety and Funding Challenges

The safety of schools is a paramount concern for Mozdzen, particularly in light of recent incidents such as the violence at École secondaire Neelin High School last June. Understanding the anxieties parents feel, she believes that prevention strategies should be prioritized. While she has welcomed the establishment of safe advisory councils by the division, she also advocates for exploring security measures, contingent on funding availability.

“Funding is always the most challenging aspect,” Mozdzen acknowledged. “But trustees must do their best to protect what matters most to families: the quality of their children’s education.” She stressed the importance of maximizing every dollar spent to ensure that students and families receive the necessary support.

As a single mother of two sons who have successfully graduated from the Brandon School Division, Mozdzen’s personal experience informs her commitment to enhancing the school environment. “I know the school system works — both of my sons succeeded here. Now I want to give back by helping make sure every family feels that same sense of belonging and opportunity.”

With campaigning still in its early stages, Mozdzen reports receiving positive encouragement from friends, colleagues, and community members. “I wouldn’t be running if I didn’t think I had a chance,” she remarked. “But more than anything, I want the best person for the job to win — because our schools, students, and families deserve it.”

The byelection was prompted by the resignation of Blaine Foley in March. Advanced polling is set for October 8 and 11, 2023, with the general school board election scheduled for October 28, 2026, coinciding with municipal elections. As candidates prepare for the upcoming election, Mozdzen’s focus remains steadfast on the well-being of students and families in the Brandon School Division.
