Newly elected trustee Shawna Mozdzen was officially sworn in during a special meeting of the Brandon School Division board on the evening of October 30, 2023. The ceremony marked the beginning of her tenure representing Ward 1 following a successful byelection.

Mozdzen took the oath of office with her right hand raised, committing to “faithfully perform her duties and uphold the trustee code of ethics as a trustee of the Brandon School Division.” The ceremony was conducted by Denis Labossiere, the secretary-treasurer, who also witnessed the signing of official documents in accordance with the Public Schools Act.

In her first comments after being sworn in, Mozdzen expressed enthusiasm about her new role. “I’d like to get started and just work as a board — bring everyone together at the same table and come to great decisions as a board,” she stated.

Her priorities include advocating for both students and staff. “Just have my voice heard and speak to what I believe in, like I always do, and just try to do everything that’s right for the students and staff,” she added.

Mozdzen’s election on October 16, 2023 was marked by a decisive victory, where she garnered 2,229 votes, representing 56.7 percent of the total. She outperformed six other candidates, including Henry Sieklicki, Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, and Eren Oleson.

Her campaign focused on fostering a school environment where students and families feel “supported, included, and safe.” According to the senior election official, the total number of votes cast in the byelection was 3,929, with 596 votes cast during advance polling and sealed ballots.

As Mozdzen embarks on her role, her commitment to collaboration and advocacy for the Brandon School Division community will be closely watched. Her approach aims to unite the board and ensure that the needs of students and staff are prioritized throughout her term.
