Students Discover Agricultural Careers at Chatham-Kent Event
Students from Ridgetown District High School, along with peers from across Chatham-Kent, participated in the Agriculture Career Day on November 18, 2023, at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus. This event provided attendees the opportunity to explore various career paths within the agricultural sector while connecting directly with industry employers.
The day featured hands-on demonstrations of the latest agricultural technologies, particularly in ag-robotics. Students witnessed how robotics and automation are revolutionizing the agri-food industry, offering them a glimpse into the future of farming. Numerous agribusinesses set up booths and delivered presentations, allowing students to engage with local employers and industry leaders.
The event emphasized not just career exploration but also networking opportunities, enabling students to connect with experts and organizations that can aid in their future pursuits in agriculture. “Events like Agriculture Career Day are an important way to build awareness of workforce needs and help students stay connected to local employment opportunities,” said Teresa Fysh, Chatham-Kent Talent Attraction and Retention Coordinator. She highlighted the importance of linking education with industry to create a strong local future for students.
Sean Columbus, Economic Development Officer, underscored innovation as a cornerstone of Chatham-Kent’s agri-food sector. “Events like Agriculture Career Day showcase how new ideas and technologies are shaping opportunities for students and employers alike,” he noted.
Participating employers included prominent organizations such as The Andersons, Peeters Mushroom Farm, Drone Spray Canada, and Dairy Farmers of Ontario, among others. These companies provided insights into the diverse career opportunities available in agriculture, reflecting the industry’s evolving landscape.
Collaboration was key to the event’s success, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus, and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent working together alongside local employers and educators. The initiative was coordinated by the CK Job Preparation Action Team, which aims to connect educational institutions with industry to highlight career prospects and promote workforce development throughout Chatham-Kent.
As students engaged in discussions and activities throughout the day, the event not only prepared them for potential careers but also fostered a sense of community within the agricultural sector. The enthusiasm and energy present at the Agriculture Career Day demonstrated a collective commitment to shaping the future of agriculture in Chatham-Kent.
