School District 46 has launched a district-wide Inclusion Review aimed at enhancing support for all learners. This initiative was announced during the Board of Education meeting on December 10 and outlined in a report by Superintendent Kate Kerr. The review seeks to evaluate the delivery of inclusive education across the district, ensuring that current practices align with contemporary evidence and promote effective resource utilization.

The review will scrutinize various aspects, including systems, processes, resource allocation, and policies related to inclusive education. It is designed to align with the Ministry of Education and Child Care’s updated Inclusive Education Services manual, while also addressing local needs and contexts.

To facilitate this process, the district has enlisted consultant Rick Ryan, a former deputy superintendent of the Richmond School District, who brings a wealth of experience in district leadership, system planning, counseling, and inclusive education. In her report, Kerr highlighted Ryan’s contributions, stating, “Rick brings extensive experience in district leadership, system planning, counselling and inclusive education.”

During the board meeting, trustees expressed interest in the timeline for the review’s outcomes. Kerr indicated that the initiative is still in its preliminary stages, noting, “There’s a lot of homework and a lot of things to look at and research.” She further explained that updates will be provided in the coming months, saying, “We will have more information as the months go by… I would think we’d be able to bring something back, certainly, even in an informal update in a few months.”

Kerr underscored the importance of continuous improvement in inclusive education practices, stating, “We know we do excellent work with inclusive education. And I think it’s really important that we’re constantly looking at how we can keep transforming, keep doing even better with our practices.”

As the district embarks on this comprehensive review, the focus remains on fostering an inclusive educational environment that benefits students, families, and staff alike. The outcome of this initiative could significantly influence how inclusive education is approached in the future, ultimately enhancing the educational experiences of all learners within the district.
