The latest academic ranking has identified the top 10 universities in Canada, showcasing the nation’s strengths in higher education. Released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) evaluates approximately 2,500 institutions globally. This year, three Canadian universities secured places within the top 100 worldwide, underscoring their international prominence.
The evaluation process involves a rigorous assessment based on several criteria. These include the number of staff and alumni who have received prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal, the number of highly cited researchers, and the volume of published papers in leading journals like Nature and Science. Performance is also gauged through the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index, along with a per capita academic performance measurement.
According to the report, the University of Toronto has claimed the top position this year. It achieved a score of 41.5, with notable metrics including 23.9 staff and 16.1 alumni who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, along with 38.9 highly cited researchers and 36.2 papers published in Nature and Science from 2020 to 2024.
