Two Students Achieve Perfect IB Scores at White Oaks Secondary
Two Grade 12 students from White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, Ontario, have achieved perfect scores in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Yanzi Guo and Bana Maarouf were awarded top marks of 7 in all six subject areas, in addition to receiving an ‘A’ in both the Theory of Knowledge course and the Extended Essay. This accomplishment is rare, with only a small percentage of students reaching such heights in the IB program, which is recognized worldwide.
The IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year curriculum designed for highly motivated students, offering advanced education in various disciplines, including languages, mathematics, humanities, and sciences. The program is available at approximately 5,000 schools globally, including several institutions in Halton, such as Burlington Central High School and Craig Kielburger Secondary School.
Tara Connor, Superintendent of Education for Learning and Achievement (Grade 9-12) within the Halton District School Board (HDSB), expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments. “Yanzi and Bana’s outstanding achievement speaks to the program’s depth and rigour, as well as the dedication of the educators who bring it to life each day,” she stated. Connor emphasized that providing high-quality programming like the IB program has a profound impact, inspiring students and preparing them for a complex, interconnected world.
Principal Derek Graham of White Oaks Secondary School highlighted the significance of the IB program. He noted that Yanzi and Bana exemplify the core values of academic excellence, global-mindedness, and community service. “Our students consistently perform at the highest levels, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements,” he remarked.
Reflecting on her experience, Bana Maarouf shared, “The IB program gave me the opportunities to refine my skills in critical thinking, time management, and communication. I’m so thankful to have achieved this score.” She credited the support from her friends, family, and teachers for helping her navigate challenges during her studies.
Yanzi Guo also expressed gratitude towards the faculty and staff at White Oaks. “I’ve learned so much during my time in the IB program, even beyond academics. It has helped me grow as a person,” he noted. Guo emphasized the importance of community and support in achieving his goals.
The HDSB is currently focused on its 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which aims to align the efforts of over 67,000 students and 11,000 staff members. This plan includes six commitments to ensure a cohesive approach in fulfilling educational objectives across the district.
Through the achievements of students like Yanzi Guo and Bana Maarouf, the Halton District School Board continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering academic excellence and preparing students for future success.
