The Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto (U of T), Anil Kishen, is currently on leave as the university conducts an investigation into the use of racist images during one of his recent lectures. This decision comes after concerns were raised about the implications of these images on the learning environment and the impact on students and faculty.

In a statement to CP24, Trevor Young, U of T’s vice-president and provost, confirmed that Kishen has expressed his commitment to fully participate in the investigation. Young noted that Kishen will remain off duty while the inquiry is ongoing. “The Dean reports that he used these images without appreciating the antisemitic and discriminatory meanings and their negative impact on Jewish colleagues and students, as well as the broader learning environment,” Young stated.

Following the incident, Kishen has taken steps to address the matter. He has removed the offensive images from his course materials and has issued a direct apology to his class and the wider Faculty. Young emphasized that Kishen has also pledged to enhance his diligence in reviewing course materials to foster an inclusive and respectful learning environment for all students. Additionally, he will work on improving his understanding of antisemitism and other forms of discrimination.

The university has opted not to provide further comments on the situation at this time. Kishen, who joined U of T in 2009, was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry in April 2025, officially taking on the role on July 1, 2025. Known for his contributions to oral health nanomedicine and endodontics, Kishen is a respected academic and inventor.

CP24 has made attempts to reach out to Kishen directly for comments but has yet to receive a response. The outcome of the investigation will likely shape future policies regarding educational materials and inclusivity at the university.
