University of Victoria Responds to Controversial Campus Event
The University of Victoria has expressed its position regarding a controversial public talk scheduled for December 2, 2025, on its campus. The university’s administration confirmed that the event, which has sparked divisive opinions, is not sanctioned or authorized by the institution.
In a statement, Dr. Robina Thomas, Acting President, emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity. The university upholds the principles of ʔetalnəw ̓ əl ̓ | ÁTOL,NEUEL, which promotes mutual respect and recognition of the rights of all individuals. She articulated the institution’s dedication to honouring the lost children and survivors of residential schools, alongside their families and communities.
The organizers of the planned event did not notify the university or submit a request for authorization. This lack of formal engagement means that the university cannot support or endorse the event. The administration acknowledged that such events can have a significant impact on community members, particularly those who may feel marginalized or harmed by the discussions that arise.
Dr. Thomas reassured students and faculty that various resources and support systems are available for those affected by the situation. The university has outlined several programs to assist Indigenous students and the broader community, recognizing the emotional toll that divisive events can take on individuals.
Support Resources for Students
The university has made it clear that students can access numerous support services tailored to their needs. Indigenous counsellors are available to provide individual and group counselling that addresses the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of well-being. Sessions are designed to be flexible, allowing for immediate support in emergencies without long wait times.
The Hope for Wellness Helpline is another key resource, offering 24-hour support across Canada. This helpline can assist with a wide range of issues, including mental health concerns and coping strategies in response to distressing media narratives. Both telephone and online chat options are available in English and French, with additional language support in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut upon request.
Students can also reach out to the KUU-US Crisis Line Society, which operates a dedicated crisis line for adults, Elders, and youth. This service is accessible at any hour, providing immediate support and intervention.
Furthermore, the university promotes SupportConnect, a confidential mental health service available to all students. This platform connects students to qualified professionals who provide support via phone or online, ensuring help is available whenever needed.
Community Commitment to Inclusion
Dr. Thomas reiterated the importance of unity and collaboration in building an inclusive campus culture. She urged members of the university community to support one another and to stand firm in their shared values.
The university’s Indigenous Plan highlights its commitment to respecting the self-determining rights of Indigenous Peoples. The administration recognizes that failing to honor these rights can perpetuate historical harms, and it remains dedicated to fostering an environment that prioritizes healing and reconciliation.
As the scheduled event approaches, the University of Victoria continues to encourage open dialogue and emphasizes the availability of support resources to its community. The administration’s proactive stance aims to mitigate potential harm and reinforce a culture of respect and understanding.
