West Hill Class of 1978-79 to Reunite for Milestone Celebration
The class of 1978-79 from West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound, Ontario, is set to reunite on September 27, 2025, marking a significant occasion for former students to reconnect and reflect on their shared experiences. This reunion will take place at the Legacy Ridge Golf Club, providing a venue for over 50 attendees, including classmates and approximately a dozen teachers.
Originally opened in 1960, West Hill Secondary School underwent a name change in 2016 to become Owen Sound District Secondary School (OSDSS) following a school accommodation review. This review resulted in the closure of a competing institution, OSCVI, and the consolidation of all public high school students at OSDSS.
Organizers Jill McFadden-Bartley and Mark May have expressed excitement about the reunion, which coincides with another gathering of West Hill alumni. McFadden-Bartley noted the significance of the milestone, as many attendees will turn 65 years old this year. “The class of 1978-79 was particularly close and caring, supported by teachers who fostered a strong sense of community,” she remarked.
The reunion will feature displays of West Hill memorabilia, including jackets, yearbooks, and photographs. A memorial table will honor former classmates who have passed away, reflecting the deep bonds formed during their high school years. The last school-wide reunion took place in 2010, where many alumni had the opportunity to reconnect.
Currently, organizers have verified contact information for around 100 former students. The class list comprises over 160 names, with 17 classmates confirmed deceased. Approximately 60% of confirmed attendees hail from the Grey-Bruce region.
Participants are encouraged to RSVP by September 17, 2025, with a nominal fee of $20 for the afternoon gathering or $60 for both the afternoon event and dinner. “There has been a positive local response, and some classmates will return to town for the event,” May stated in a news release.
McFadden-Bartley, who served as student president in 1977-78, shared fond memories of her time at West Hill. She emphasized that all former students, regardless of their level of involvement in school activities, are welcome to attend. Those interested can confirm their attendance by emailing [email protected].
As the date approaches, anticipation is building for this reunion, allowing former classmates to celebrate their past and reconnect in a meaningful way.
