Bernadette Peters and Beth Leavel Shine at Broadway Barks Event
Veteran actresses Bernadette Peters and Beth Leavel co-hosted the 27th edition of “Broadway Barks” on July 12, 2023, in New York City. This star-studded event, aimed at promoting dog and cat adoptions, benefits local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Held in the vibrant atmosphere of Shubert Alley, the initiative is produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Peters, a Tony Award-winning co-founder of “Broadway Barks,” expressed her enthusiasm for the event. “It feels great. Didn’t I pick the perfect co-host with Beth Leavel? She loves animals so much, and what Beth said is so important,” Peters stated. Their shared passion for animal rescue was evident throughout the day, as they encouraged attendees to consider adopting rescue animals.
Reflecting on her long-standing involvement, Peters noted, “I always knew I loved animals, and I am just so happy that this has happened. ‘Broadway Barks’ has become a part of the Broadway community, and they come out in-between shows.” She recalled the participation of legendary actress Angela Lansbury, who had previously been involved in the event. For Peters, the uplifting energy of Shubert Alley, filled with people and animals, creates a magical atmosphere centered around love and connection.
Leavel shared her own sentiments, saying, “It feels overwhelming because I know I can’t take home 300 dogs.” Her dedication to the cause resonates deeply, as she looks forward to the reunion with her cast from “Old Friends,” another Broadway production. “Rescue dogs are the best lovers in the world,” Leavel concluded, emphasizing the joy and companionship these animals bring.
The event drew attention not only for its noble cause but also for the vibrant Broadway community it brought together. Attendees enjoyed interactions with a variety of adoptable pets, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. Peters and Leavel’s heartfelt messages underscored the importance of adopting rescue animals, reminding everyone of the profound impact these furry friends can have in people’s lives.
As the day unfolded, the atmosphere in Shubert Alley remained joyful and spirited. Peters highlighted the significance of the event within the broader context of Broadway, stating, “The feeling in the Alley is so healing; people will feel so uplifted.” The event serves as a reminder of the power of community and compassion, as well as the ongoing need to support animal rescue efforts.
