Brightstone Launches Affordable Housing in Mississauga’s OG Urban Towns
Brightstone has unveiled its latest housing project, the OG Urban Towns, located in the heart of Mississauga. This development aims to address the pressing need for affordable homes, often referred to as the “missing middle.” These homes are designed for singles, young couples, or those looking to downsize, with prices starting at $500,000.
The concept of the missing middle highlights a gap in housing options suitable for individuals seeking alternatives to large family homes or high-rise condos. The OG Urban Towns project features 101 stacked townhouses situated near essential amenities and public transport, making it an attractive option for potential buyers.
Strategically Located for Urban Living
Yoav Bohbot, vice-president and director of acquisitions at Brightstone, emphasizes the strategic nature of the development’s location. The project is adjacent to Mississauga’s city centre, providing residents easy access to a vibrant urban environment. The nearby Hurontario spine, a dedicated Light Rail Transit (LRT) route, will further enhance connectivity from Lakeshore Road in Port Credit to Brampton.
In addition to public transit, the OG Urban Towns site is conveniently located near major highways, including the QEW, 401, 407, 403, 427, and 410. This accessibility is crucial for residents commuting to workplaces or engaging in leisure activities across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The development is also positioned near the expanding Trillium Hospital, which is undergoing significant growth with the addition of the 600,000 sq. ft. Queensway Health Centre. This expansion is expected to create approximately 2,400 new jobs, reinforcing the area’s appeal to prospective homeowners.
Focusing on Livability and Community
Brightstone’s approach to development prioritizes the concept of livability. Each unit in the OG Urban Towns is designed with bright open spaces and numerous windows, allowing for ample natural light. This focus on design aims to foster a sense of community among residents.
The development offers a variety of unit types, including Garden, Patio, and Terrace options, available in one- and two-storey configurations. Potential buyers can choose from one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts, with sizes ranging from 555 sq. ft. to 1,500 sq. ft.. Additionally, selected units feature unique rooftop terraces and easy access to community parks, enhancing the overall living experience.
Bohbot acknowledges that while infill developments like the OG Urban Towns present opportunities, they are not without challenges. “These neighborhoods often have more restrictive zoning bylaws, limited land availability, and a highly engaged public with rigorous expectations,” he noted. Other obstacles can include traffic and parking constraints, as well as the need for infrastructure upgrades.
Despite these challenges, Brightstone remains committed to identifying residential or mixed-use properties in the GTA that are suitable for intensification. Other notable Brightstone developments include the Schoolhaus Towns in Oshawa, The Elms of Thornhill Woods, and The Briar on Avenue in Toronto, among others.
As the housing crisis persists in urban areas, projects like the OG Urban Towns could play a vital role in providing affordable options that cater to a diverse range of buyers, from first-time homeowners to those wishing to downsize.
